What is an RF circulator?

A radio-frequency circulator is a branch transmission system characterized by non-reciprocal properties. The ferrite radio-frequency circulator, as shown in the figure, consists of a Y-shaped central structure made up of three branch lines symmetrically arranged at 120° angles to each other. When the external magnetic field is zero, the ferrite material remains unmagnetized, and thus its magnetic properties are identical in all directions. When a signal is input from port 1, it excites a magnetic field at the ferrite junction, as illustrated in the magneto-dynamic characteristic diagram. This magnetic field then guides the signal to be output from port 2. Similarly, a signal input from port 2 will be transmitted to port 3, and a signal input from port 3 will be transmitted to port 1. Due to its ability to cyclically transmit signals in this manner, it is called a radio-frequency circulator.
